Prepare the Paper

Choose a square sheet of paper for your snowflake decoration. White paper is the traditional choice, but colored paper can make the snowflakes more cheerful and festive. You can also use recycled paper if you want to create an inexpensive and eco-friendly decoration.
Square paper is especially useful because it makes the folding process easier and helps create a balanced snowflake pattern. If you only have rectangular paper, you can turn it into a square by folding one corner across the sheet and trimming away the extra section.

Before you begin folding, make sure the paper is clean, flat, and large enough for comfortable cutting. Thicker paper can produce stronger snowflakes, while ordinary printer paper is easier to fold and cut. For more ideas and detailed instructions, see the Paper Snowflake Decorations guide.
