What Is a Rhino Horn?

A rhinoceros horn is one of the most distinctive features of a rhino. Unlike the horns of many other horned animals, a rhino horn does not have a bony core. Instead, it is made primarily from a dense mass of specialized skin cells called keratin.

No Bony Core

One of the most interesting characteristics of a rhino horn is the absence of a bony core. The horn grows from specialized skin cells that produce large amounts of keratin, the same tough structural protein found in human hair and fingernails.

This makes the rhino horn structurally different from many familiar animal horns. It is better described as a compact mass of hardened keratin rather than a piece of bone covered by a protective layer.

How Does a Rhino Horn Grow?

Rhino horns continuously grow throughout the animal’s life. Cells near the base of the horn produce keratin, gradually pushing older material toward the tip.

The horn can become worn down naturally through activities such as rubbing, digging, fighting, and interacting with vegetation. As the animal continues to produce keratin, the horn can grow again.
