Why Do Pangolins Have Powerful Claws?
Pangolins have powerful, curved claws mainly because they use them to dig into the ground. Their claws are strong enough to break through hard soil, termite mounds, and ant nests. This allows pangolins to reach the insects hidden deep inside. Their claws also help them search for food. Pangolins feed mainly on ants and termites, so they use their front claws to tear open nests and loosen soil. Once the nest is opened, their long, sticky tongue can reach deep inside to collect the insects.

Powerful claws are also useful for digging burrows and creating shelter. Some pangolin species can excavate surprisingly deep burrows where they sleep, rest, and protect themselves from predators and harsh weather. Thus, their claws are important tools for feeding, shelter, and survival.
