A car battery typically lasts around 3–5 years, although its actual lifespan depends on climate, driving habits, vehicle condition, and battery quality. Frequent short trips may prevent the alternator from fully recharging the battery, while extreme heat can accelerate battery deterioration. Vibration, poor terminal connections, electrical problems, and leaving lights or accessories running can also shorten battery life.
Regular maintenance can help a battery reach the upper end of its expected lifespan. Keep the terminals clean and securely connected, check the battery voltage periodically, and make sure the vehicle’s charging system is working properly. If you notice slow engine cranking, dim lights, repeated starting difficulties, or a battery that frequently loses charge, it may be approaching the end of its useful life and should be tested or replaced.
