Are possums dangerous?

Possums are generally not dangerous to humans and are usually shy, peaceful animals that prefer to avoid confrontation. When threatened, they may hiss, growl, bare their teeth, or pretend to be dead to discourage predators. Although they have sharp teeth and claws, possums rarely attack people unless they feel trapped or are handled. They may bite or scratch if frightened, so it is best to observe them from a safe distance and never attempt to pick them up. Despite their sometimes frightening appearance, possums are not naturally aggressive animals.

However, possums can present a few risks to people and pets. They may carry parasites, including fleas and ticks, and can contaminate food or surfaces with their droppings. Bites and scratches may also cause infections. In North America, Virginia opossums have a relatively low risk of carrying rabies compared with many other wild mammals, but the risk is not zero. Australian possums are different animals and may behave differently when threatened. To stay safe, keep pets away from wild possums, secure rubbish bins, avoid feeding them, and contact a wildlife professional if one appears injured or behaves unusually. If a possum bites or scratches you, wash the wound thoroughly with soap and running water and seek medical advice.
