Possums belong to the animal kingdom, Kingdom Animalia, and are classified as mammals because they have fur, breathe air with lungs, and females produce milk to feed their young. Most possums are marsupials, meaning females carry and nurse their developing babies in a pouch. They belong to the order Diprotodontia, which also includes kangaroos, koalas, and wombats. Possums are native mainly to Australia, New Guinea, and nearby islands, where they inhabit forests, woodlands, and other natural environments. Although the words possum and opossum are sometimes used interchangeably, they usually refer to different animals: possums are primarily Australasian marsupials, while opossums are found mainly in the Americas.

Within the animal kingdom, possums play an important role in maintaining healthy ecosystems. Depending on the species, they feed on fruits, leaves, flowers, insects, and other small food sources. By eating fruits and spreading seeds through their droppings, some possums help forests regenerate. Others contribute to insect population control and serve as prey for larger predators, forming an important part of the food web. Their adaptations, including grasping feet, sharp claws, sensitive senses, and, in many species, prehensile tails, help them climb trees and find food. Understanding the possum’s place in the animal kingdom helps us appreciate its evolutionary relationships, ecological importance, and the need to protect its natural habitats.
