A possum is a small to medium-sized marsupial, a type of mammal whose females carry and nourish their young in a pouch or, in some species, in a pouch-like area during early development. Possums are native mainly to Australia, New Guinea, and nearby islands, where they live in forests, woodlands, gardens, and other habitats. They have soft fur, sharp claws, strong limbs, and long tails that help many species climb trees and move through branches. Most possums are nocturnal, meaning they are most active at night. They feed on a varied diet that may include leaves, fruits, flowers, nectar, insects, and small animals, depending on the species.

Possums play an important role in their ecosystems by helping disperse seeds, pollinate certain plants, and control insect populations. Some species live high in trees, while others spend more time on the ground or adapt to urban environments. Possums are often confused with opossums, which belong to a different group of marsupials found mainly in the Americas. Although the names sound similar, Australian possums and American opossums differ in appearance, behavior, and evolutionary history. Understanding these fascinating animals helps us appreciate their biodiversity and recognize the importance of protecting their natural habitats.
