Two Amur leopard cubs have been born at Korkeasaari Zoo in Helsinki, offering a welcome boost to conservation efforts for one of the world’s most endangered big cats. The birth is especially significant because Amur leopards face severe threats in the wild, including habitat loss, poaching, and declining prey populations.
The cubs, a male and a female, are now about five weeks old and each weighs approximately 2.5 kilograms. Three cubs were born at the end of July, but sadly, only two survived. Zoo staff are carefully monitoring the surviving cubs as they grow and develop under the protection of their mother.
For now, the young leopards remain mostly inside their den, where they can stay warm and protected while developing their strength and coordination. They are expected to begin venturing outside the den at around two months of age. This will be an important stage in their development and will allow visitors to eventually catch their first glimpses of the playful cubs.
The cubs have already received their first health examination. During the check-up, zoo staff and veterinarians weighed both animals, treated them for worms, and fitted them with identification microchips. These routine procedures help the zoo monitor their health, maintain accurate records, and provide appropriate care as they mature.
The arrival of the two cubs represents an encouraging development for Amur leopard conservation. Captive-breeding programs at zoos can help maintain healthy populations and support international conservation efforts aimed at protecting the species. As these young leopards grow, their progress will be closely followed by both zoo staff and visitors who hope to see them thrive.
