DIY Spiral Tie-Dye T-Shirt

Create a colorful spiral tie-dye T-shirt at home using a few simple materials. This fun DIY project is perfect for beginners, children with adult supervision, and anyone who wants to transform a plain white T-shirt into a unique piece of clothing.

What You Will Need

  • One clean white cotton T-shirt
  • Fabric or tie-dye colors in several shades
  • Rubber bands
  • Disposable gloves
  • Plastic sheet or old newspaper
  • Plastic squeeze bottles
  • Water
  • Plastic bag
  • Paper towels or an old cloth

How to Make a Spiral Tie-Dye T-Shirt

Step 1: Prepare the T-Shirt

Wash the white cotton T-shirt before starting. Do not use fabric softener because it can interfere with dye absorption. Keep the shirt slightly damp before beginning the tie-dye process.

Step 2: Choose the Center

Lay the T-shirt flat on a protected work surface. Choose a point near the center of the shirt. This point will become the center of your spiral design.

Step 3: Twist the Shirt

Pinch the fabric at the selected center point. Slowly rotate the fabric in one direction while allowing the rest of the T-shirt to gather around it. Continue twisting until the entire shirt forms a compact spiral shape.

Step 4: Secure the Spiral

Use rubber bands to hold the twisted shirt securely. Place the bands across the bundle so that they create several sections. These sections will help separate the different dye colors.

Step 5: Apply the Dye

Put on gloves and prepare your fabric dyes according to their instructions. Apply different colors to alternating sections of the spiral. Squeeze the dye into the fabric rather than simply covering the surface.

Step 6: Let the Dye Set

Carefully place the dyed shirt inside a plastic bag and seal it. Allow the dye to set for the amount of time recommended by the dye manufacturer. This helps the colors become brighter and more permanent.

Step 7: Rinse the Shirt

Remove the rubber bands and gently unfold the shirt. Rinse it under cool running water until most of the excess dye has been removed and the water becomes relatively clear.

Step 8: Wash and Dry

Wash the T-shirt separately for the first few washes. Follow the washing instructions provided with your dye. Once clean, allow the shirt to dry completely.

Creative Tip: Try three-color combinations such as blue, purple, and pink, or use rainbow colors for a bright and playful spiral. For a softer look, use pastel shades.
Safety First: Wear gloves and protect your working surface from dye. Keep dye away from your eyes, mouth, furniture, and surfaces that can stain. Children should complete the dyeing process with adult supervision.

Your Spiral Tie-Dye T-Shirt Is Ready!

Your plain T-shirt has now been transformed into a colorful, handmade spiral design. Every tie-dye shirt is slightly different, making your creation completely unique.
