Step 9: Inspect the joint
A good solder joint should securely connect the components and should not have excessive solder, loose wires, or accidental bridges between neighboring connections.
Step 10: Clean the tip
After finishing, clean the tip using the appropriate tip-cleaning method and leave a small amount of solder on the tip before switching off the iron. This helps protect the tip from oxidation.
Using the Desoldering Pump
If you make a mistake or need to remove a component:
- Heat the old solder with the soldering iron.
- Keep the desoldering pump ready.
- Once the solder becomes liquid, activate the pump.
- The pump draws the molten solder away from the joint.
- Remove remaining solder if necessary.
- Reheat the joint carefully if the component still cannot be removed.
Simple DIY Project: Repair a Broken Wire
A good beginner project is repairing a low-voltage electronic wire.
- Disconnect the equipment from its power source.
- Locate the damaged section.
- Cut away the damaged portion if necessary.
- Strip a small amount of insulation from both wire ends.
- Twist the conductors together.
- Heat the joint with the soldering iron.
- Apply a small amount of solder.
- Allow the joint to cool.
- Insulate the repaired connection appropriately.

Safety: Never practice soldering on mains-powered equipment while it is energized. For beginners, use low-voltage battery-powered or isolated electronic projects. The soldering iron tip becomes extremely hot and can cause serious burns, while soldering fumes should not be deliberately inhaled.
