Making a handmade postcard is a fun and creative activity that encourages children to express themselves through art and writing. It helps improve fine motor skills, creativity, and communication while giving them an opportunity to create something meaningful for family members or friends. Children can make postcards for birthdays, holidays, thank-you notes, or simply to brighten someone’s day.
Materials Required
Before starting, gather the following materials:
- Thick cardstock or colored construction paper
- Ruler
- Pencil
- Safety scissors
- Colored pencils, crayons, or markers
- Glue stick
- Stickers
- Colored paper scraps
- Washi tape (optional)
- Decorative stamps (optional)
- Glitter glue or sequins (optional)
- Family photos or magazine cut-outs (optional)
- Black fine-tip marker
- Address label or blank mailing label (optional)
DIY Step 1: Cut the Card

Cut a piece of cardstock into a rectangle measuring approximately 4 × 6 inches (10 × 15 cm) or any standard postcard size. This will become the postcard.
DIY Step 2: Design the Front

On one side of the postcard, draw a colorful picture. Children can create flowers, animals, rainbows, trees, houses, favorite cartoon characters, or a beautiful landscape. They may also glue on stickers, colored paper shapes, or small photographs to make the design more interesting.
