Who Needs Angioplasty?

  • Narrowed arteries
  • Congenital abnormalities

CT coronary angiography is particularly useful in patients with a low to intermediate risk of coronary artery disease.

Coronary Angiography: The Gold Standard

Coronary angiography remains the most accurate method for evaluating coronary artery disease.

During the procedure:

  • A catheter is inserted through the wrist or groin.
  • Contrast dye is injected into the coronary arteries.
  • X-ray imaging visualizes blood flow.
  • Cardiologists identify the exact location and severity of blockages.

If a significant blockage is found, angioplasty can often be performed immediately during the same procedure.

Understanding Percentage of Artery Blockage

Patients are often told they have a certain percentage of blockage.

Examples include:

  • Less than 50% blockage: Usually managed with medication and lifestyle modification.
  • 50–70% blockage: Treatment depends on symptoms, blood flow studies, and lesion characteristics.

Diabetes

Multiple Blocked Arteries
