Waltti App Payment Outage Disrupts Public Transport Across Finland

By Technology & Transport Desk

Commuters across Finland experienced widespread disruption after a technical fault affected the Waltti mobile ticketing system, preventing many passengers from purchasing public transport tickets through the app in several major cities. The outage impacted public transportation operators in Helsinki, Kuopio, Tampere, Oulu, and other municipalities that use the Waltti platform. In total, the app serves passengers in 17 Finnish cities, including Turku, Lahti, Jyväskylä, and Mikkeli.

Mobile Payments Temporarily Unavailable

The disruption affected only the Waltti mobile application, leaving alternative payment methods such as cash, debit cards, and travel cards fully operational. According to Kuopio City Public Transport (Vilkku), the technical problem was first reported at approximately 8:00 a.m. Officials initially estimated that repairs could take several hours. Users were notified of the issue through the mobile application, although information was not immediately available on the Vilkku or Waltti websites.

HSL Experiences Similar Issues

The problem also affected the Helsinki Regional Transport Authority app in the Helsinki metropolitan area, where payment difficulties had already begun the previous day.

HSL announced that a payment issue identified on the morning of 22 July 2026 continued into the following day, preventing customers from completing purchases using MobilePay, payments charged to mobile phone bills, and commuter benefit services.

However, passengers were still able to purchase tickets using standard bank card payments through the app or by tapping contactless payment cards at ticket readers.

Most Services Restored

By 2:30 p.m., HSL reported that most of the technical issues had been resolved. The operator confirmed that payments made through MobilePay and mobile phone billing were functioning again, although transactions using the Epassi employee benefit service remained unavailable.

HSL also assured customers that any funds reserved during failed purchase attempts would be refunded automatically.

“We apologise for the inconvenience,” the transit operator said while confirming that engineers were continuing work to restore full functionality.

Importance of Reliable Digital Ticketing

The incident highlights the growing dependence on mobile applications for public transportation. As more commuters rely on smartphones for ticket purchases and journey planning, even temporary service interruptions can affect thousands of passengers during busy travel periods.

Transport operators encouraged travelers to use alternative payment methods until all services returned to normal and assured customers that efforts were underway to prevent similar disruptions in the future.
