The root cause of dehydrated and less plump skin is a loss of moisture, a weakened skin barrier, and a gradual reduction in collagen and elastin. Skin naturally loses its ability to retain water as we age. Environmental factors such as sun exposure, hot weather, air conditioning, pollution, and harsh skincare products can further increase moisture loss. When the skin lacks water, it may look dull, feel tight, and show fine lines more prominently.
Another important cause is the reduction of natural moisturizing factors, hyaluronic acid, and skin-supporting lipids. Hyaluronic acid helps attract and retain water, while ceramides help maintain the skin’s protective barrier. With aging, collagen and elastin also decline, reducing firmness and elasticity. Dehydration, inadequate nutrition, poor sleep, and smoking may contribute to a tired or less supple appearance.
To hydrate and plump the skin, use a gentle cleanser, apply a moisturizer containing hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and ceramides, and protect your skin daily with broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher sunscreen. Apply moisturizer while the skin is slightly damp to help retain moisture. Drink enough water to meet your body’s needs, eat a balanced diet, and avoid excessive exfoliation. Remember that dehydrated skin lacks water, whereas dry skin generally lacks sufficient oil; both conditions can occur together.
