Perhaps the purpose of life is deeper than the roles we perform. Raising children, building a career, earning money, serving the country, protecting society, or creating something useful are all meaningful purposes—but they may be expressions of a greater purpose rather than the ultimate purpose itself. We raise children, but eventually they become independent. We serve our country, but one generation eventually gives way to another. We build houses, businesses, institutions, and even nations, yet these too change with time. So we may ask: If everything I accomplish is temporary, what makes my life meaningful?
Perhaps the greater purpose is to become more aware, more compassionate, wiser, and more fully human—and to contribute something positive to the lives of others while we are here. Life may be less about what we possess or accomplish and more about what we become and what we give. A parent gives love and wisdom to children; an engineer creates something useful; a citizen protects and improves society; a teacher awakens curiosity; a human being offers kindness to another human being.
There may also be an even deeper question: Who am I beneath all these roles? Before being a parent, engineer, citizen, husband, professional, or provider, there is simply the experience of being alive—seeing, feeling, thinking, loving, suffering, learning and becoming aware. Exploring that dimension can transform the question from “What should I achieve in life?” to “How deeply can I experience life, understand myself, and contribute to the world?”
Perhaps the greater purpose is not one single mission given to everyone. It may be a journey: to awaken, to understand, to love, to serve, to learn, and to leave the world slightly better than we found it. And perhaps, near the later part of life, the question changes again—from “What more can I achieve?” to “What wisdom can I share, what suffering can I reduce, and what goodness can I leave behind?”
