DIY Alcohol Ink Coasters
Create colorful and artistic coasters using alcohol inks. This DIY craft allows you to experiment with flowing colors, blending effects and unique patterns. Each coaster can become a one-of-a-kind piece of handmade art.
Materials You May Need
- Blank ceramic, stone, tile or suitable craft coasters
- Alcohol ink colors

Step 1: Prepare Your Working Area
Choose a clean, flat and well-ventilated working area. Cover the surface with a protective sheet or disposable paper because alcohol ink can stain many surfaces. Arrange all your materials so they are easy to reach.
Step 2: Prepare the Coaster
Clean the coaster surface and make sure it is completely dry. Remove dust, oil or other residue that could interfere with the ink. Place the coaster flat on your protected work surface.
Step 3: Put On Protective Gloves

Use a small amount of isopropyl alcohol or an appropriate blending solution to encourage the colors to move. Tilt the coaster gently or allow the liquid to flow naturally. Experiment with the direction and speed of the movement to create organic patterns.
Step 8: Experiment With Patterns
Continue adding small amounts of ink and alcohol until you are satisfied with the design. You can create flowing waves, abstract shapes, marbled effects or layered color patterns. Try not to overwork the surface because the natural movement of the ink is part of the artistic effect.
Step 9: Let the Coaster Dry
Place the finished coaster on a protected, level surface and allow it to dry completely. Drying time can vary depending on the materials and amount of liquid used, so follow the instructions supplied with your particular products. Avoid touching the design while it is drying.
Step 10: Inspect the Finished Design
Once dry, inspect the coaster carefully. Look for areas that need additional color or artistic details. If desired, add a small amount of ink to selected areas and allow the coaster to dry again.
Step 11: Apply a Protective Finish
When the artwork is completely dry, apply a clear protective finish that is compatible with the coaster material and alcohol ink. Follow the product instructions for application, ventilation, drying time and number of coats.
Step 12: Finish and Enjoy Your DIY Coaster
After the protective finish has fully cured, your handmade alcohol ink coaster is ready to use or display. Make several coasters using different color combinations and patterns to create a coordinated handmade set.
