Once I visited Helsinki, while traveling to Vasa. Central Helsinki is attractive because many of its most important sights are concentrated within a compact, walkable area. Senate Square and Helsinki Cathedral provide a beautiful introduction to the city’s neoclassical architecture, while nearby Market Square and the Old Market Hall offer Finnish food, local products and a lively waterfront atmosphere. Uspenski Cathedral, with its distinctive red-brick architecture and golden domes, is another major landmark within easy walking distance.
Another attraction is the combination of Esplanade Park, Finnish design, museums and the harbour. Visitors can stroll through Esplanade Park, explore shops featuring Finnish brands, visit Ateneum Art Museum or Oodi Helsinki Central Library, and enjoy the maritime atmosphere around the South Harbour. From Market Square, ferries also provide access to Suomenlinna Sea Fortress, making central Helsinki a convenient starting point for exploring the city and its surrounding islands.
