Introduction
Plants need water to grow, but remembering to water them regularly can sometimes be difficult. A simple solution is to make a DIY water plant pot, also called a self-watering plant pot. This project uses a basic principle called capillary action, where water moves through a material such as cotton wick from a water reservoir into the soil. This project is simple enough for students to understand and can be made using inexpensive household materials. It also provides a practical way to learn about plants, water movement, and simple engineering. The main idea is very simple. A small reservoir holds water below the plant pot. A cotton wick connects the water reservoir to the soil. When the soil becomes less moist, the wick absorbs water from the reservoir and carries it upward toward the soil. In this way, the plant can receive water gradually instead of depending entirely on someone remembering to water it every day.
Materials Required
For this project, we need:
- One small plant pot
- One small healthy green plant or seedling
- Potting soil
- One cotton wick or thick cotton cord
- One small water reservoir or container
- Clean water
- Scissors
- A small plastic tube, if desired, for easier filling of the reservoir A small container for pouring water. The same materials should be kept throughout the project so that each stage remains consistent. Before beginning, choose a healthy plant that is suitable for growing in a small pot. Herbs and many small indoor plants are good choices. The pot should have enough space for the plant’s roots, while the reservoir should be large enough to hold a useful amount of water. Safety is also important. When using scissors or making a hole in the pot, an adult or teacher should supervise children. The work area should be clean and dry. The finished system will have three important parts: the plant pot, the cotton wick, and the water reservoir. Together, these parts create a simple self-watering system.
